Buying directly from China can help international buyers access competitive prices and a wide range of products. However, for many first-time buyers, choosing the product is not the hardest part. The difficult part is understanding who is responsible for shipping, customs clearance, destination charges, import taxes and final delivery.
If EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP seem confusing, do not worry. You do not need to become an international trade expert before buying from China. What matters is knowing what your quotation includes, what it excludes and who is responsible for each step.

EXW vs FOB vs CIF vs DDP: Quick Comparison
| Trade Term | Seller Generally Handles | Buyer Generally Handles | Often Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXW | Makes goods available at the agreed location | Pickup, export arrangements, main transport, import and delivery | Experienced importers with a reliable forwarder |
| FOB | Export-side responsibilities to the agreed port of shipment | Main freight, import clearance, duties and onward delivery | Buyers with their own freight forwarder or customs broker |
| CIF | Goods, ocean freight and required cargo insurance to the named destination port | Destination charges, import clearance, duties, taxes and local delivery | Buyers who can manage arrival and import procedures |
| DDP | A more complete delivery and import arrangement to the named destination | Confirm unloading, site access and any written exclusions | Buyers seeking a more coordinated delivery solution where available |
This guide provides a practical overview. The named place, written quotation and current Incoterms rules determine the exact responsibilities.
1. What Is EXW?
Under EXW, the seller generally makes the goods available at an agreed location, often the factory. The buyer may need to arrange pickup, transportation and export-related procedures.
Because many logistics costs are not included, an EXW price can look attractive. However, the lowest supplier price does not necessarily mean the lowest final cost. EXW is generally more suitable for buyers who already have importing experience or a reliable freight forwarder in China.
2. What Is FOB?
FOB is commonly used for international sea shipments. The seller handles the shipment according to the agreed port-of-shipment responsibilities, while the buyer generally arranges the main international transportation and subsequent import procedures and costs.
FOB can be practical if you already have your own freight forwarder or customs broker and want more control over the international shipment.
3. What Is CIF?
Under CIF, the seller normally arranges the goods, ocean freight to the agreed destination port and the required cargo insurance.
CIF does not normally mean โdelivered to my home.โ After arrival, the buyer may still need to handle or pay destination port charges, customs clearance, duties and taxes, storage, local transportation, unloading, crane service or installation.
Before accepting a CIF quotation, always ask: โWhat costs will I still need to pay after the goods arrive?โ
4. What Is DDP?
DDP generally provides a more complete delivery arrangement, with the seller taking significantly more responsibility for transportation and the import process. For buyers with little importing experience, a more complete delivery solution can sometimes be easier.
The exact service must still be confirmed in writing. Ask for the final delivery destination, included services, customs-clearance responsibilities, duties and taxes, local delivery arrangements and every cost that is not included.

Do Not Compare the Product Price Alone
One of the biggest mistakes first-time buyers make is comparing only the product price. Supplier A may quote a lower supplier price, while Supplier B provides a more complete logistics solution. The real question is not โWhich supplier has the lowest product price?โ It is โWhat will my total cost be when I actually receive the goods?โ
Your estimated Total Landed Cost may include the product, China-side charges, ocean or air freight, destination port charges, customs clearance, import duties and taxes, local delivery, unloading and installation-related costs.
What Should You Confirm Before Paying?
- Which Incoterm and named place are being used?
- What exactly is included in the product quotation?
- Who arranges and pays for international shipping?
- Who handles customs clearance?
- Who pays destination port charges, duties and taxes?
- Will the goods be delivered to a port, warehouse or final address?
- Are unloading, crane or installation costs required?
- What costs are specifically not included?

Final Advice for First-Time Buyers
Do not choose a supplier simply because it offers the lowest supplier price or ocean freight. Before paying, confirm what you are buying, what the quotation includes, how the goods will reach you, who is responsible for customs clearance, what you may need to pay after arrival and your estimated total landed cost.
You do not need to understand every international trade term. We will help you understand your options and choose a suitable solution.
